A friend lent me a book called "Elvis, Jesus & Coca Cola", by Kinky Friendman. Well, this guy can surely write!
The book is a detective story set in more-or-less current-day New York city, being told by its protagonist, who happens to be the author. I didn't find the mystery's solution that surprising, but the narrative is simply brilliant – it's witty, it's funny, it can be sad at times, sometimes it's outright weird.
I heartily recommend the book, and now I'm going to look for some more by the same Kinky author.
